Chlorophyll Benefits

Chlorophyll benefits are increasingly being discovered in health circles around the world. It is particularly known for its blood-building, wound-healing, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.

Chlorophyll is the green pigment found in almost all plants, herbs and algae. It is mostly found in grasses, leaves and stems. Chlorophyll is vital for the absorption by plants of energy from the sun. This in turn triggers photosynthesis which allow for the conversion of this energy into the production of carbohydrates and other forms of usable energy. Chlorophyll is necessary for metabolic functions in plants, like respiration and growth.

Chlorophyll has been found to be chemically similar in composition to that of human blood, except that the main atomic composition of chlorophyll is magnesium, while that in blood is iron. 

Health research on chlorophyll has largely centered on the area of cancer-fighting wherein a derivative of chlorophyll called chlorophyllin was analyzed to see its effects on carcinogenic substances called aflatoxin. The magnesium in chlorophyll was replaced by copper in chlorophyllin and found that damage to DNA by aflatoxin was greatly reduced.

The study on chlorophyll benefits in fighting other ailments has since been explored and widened. Focus has expanded to look into the role of chlorophyll in an alkaline diet which many say may have promising prospects in fighting various ailments and diseases.

Chlorophyll has long been used as a food additive, primarily as a colorant to make certain drinks and food colored green. However, due to the recent preponderance of information on the health-giving properties of chlorophyll, it is now being consumed as a food supplement, either in liquid form or in semi-solid form.

Still, the most common way of obtaining chlorophyll is through the diet, through deep green vegetables that are abundant in this substance.

The following are the typical food sources of chlorophyll:

  • wheatgrass
  • broccoli
  • spinach
  • kale
  • asparagus
  • bell pepper
  • parsley
  • green peas
  • leeks
  • collard greens

The following are believed to be the chlorophyll benefits:

  • Chlorophyll may help fight gastrointestinal ailments. It may help in loosening and cleansing the colon.
