Cinnamon benefits are increasingly being discovered by health enthusiasts from all over. This has led to the spice being classified as a 'superfood'.
Cinnamon is a culinary spice that is also the dried bark of several trees belonging to the Lauraceae family. Thriving in tropical and moist climates, cinnamon is native to Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia.

Cinnamon is typically added to enhance the taste of dishes that range from soups to salads to bread. It may also be added as a flavor drinks like coffee, and may also be combined with a black tea base to form cinnamon tea. Its aromatic properties are derived from its volatile oil that may be extracted through distillation. The oil is then used for a variety of uses, from giving scent to soaps to giving flavor to candies.
The cinnamon tree typically grows up to a height of 40 feet. When the bark starts to turn brown, the stems are harvested and new bark is trained to grow in their place.
Upon gathering, the cinnamon bark is stripped of the leaves, stems and twigs, and the inner and outer layers are removed. As the bark dries, it forms into rolls. The smaller rolls are inserted into the larger rolls and are then tied in bundles that are ready to shipment.
Of late, cinnamon has been increasingly recognized for the variety of health benefits that it possesses. Its main constituents include: tannins, catechins, proanthocyanidins, resins, mucilage, calcium oxalate, cinnzelanin, cinnzelanol, and coumarin. However, there have been reports of side effects on the excessive use of cinnamon. Among the most common are said to be skin rashes, or irritation to the tissues of the mouth or stomach. In traditional medicine, cinnamon is not given to pregnant women - due to its possible stimulating effects on the uterus - and also nursing or breastfeeding women.
