Goji berry benefits have made their way into the mainstream consciousness of health aficionados from all over as marketing and promotions have brought this Chinese berry into the forefront of the modern health craze.

The goji berry has long been used as a tonic for general well-being in China. It is often referred to as a "cooling tonic".

The goji berry, also known by its other names such as wolfberry and lycii berry, is a bright orange-red, nearly chewy berry with a taste very similar to raisins. The berry is ellipsoid in shape, is very tender, and is about 1 to 2 centimeters deep. There are about 20 to 50 tiny yellow seeds in each berry and this number varies based on cultivar and fruit size. There is a curved embryo-like container inside the fruit.

Goji Berry BenefitsThe goji berry has long been cultivated in China, and also grows in the valleys of the Himalayas in Tibet, Nepal and in Mongolia. In harvesting the bright red fruits, they must be shaken from the vine rather than picked in order to avoid spoiling.

The goji berry may be eaten raw or cooked. It is an ingredient often used in Chinese soups, congee, and various chicken, beef and pork dishes. The young shoots and leaves of the goji berry bush are also grown commercially as a leaf vegetable. It can also be consumed in the form of herbal tea.

The use of goji berry should be avoided by pregnant and nursing women as it contains betaine, which is an emmenagogue and abortifacient. Some Chinese herbalists also suggest people to refrain from using it during times of cold and flu as it is thought to make the ailments worse.
