The turmeric plant possesses pale yellow flowers that are borne in spikes. They have a three-parted calyx, a five-lobed corolla, two sterile stamens, one fertile stamen and one pistil. The fruit of the turmeric plant is a capsule.
Turmeric is widely used as a food seasoning, mainly as a constituent of curry dishes. The spice has a warm flavor that is at once both peppery and bitter. It possesses a mild and slight fragrance that slightly reminds one of orange and ginger. It may also be taken as a tea. Turmeric is also frequently used as a yellow-colored dye.
Turmeric is rich in the following nutrients:
Curcumin is the compound found in the rhizome of the plant where many of turmeric’s health benefits are attributed to. Curcumin is known as the principal curcuminoid of the turmeric spice. The curcuminoid is an antioxidant polyphenol compound believed to help the body’s cells resist damage brought on by the oxidation process. Curcumin is also the spice that gives most Indian food its yellow color.
As is the case a lot of herbs, turmeric should be used in moderation. Use of turmeric for extended periods of time may cause stomach distress. Women who are pregnant or trying to be pregnant should avoid the use of this spice as it is always included in Ayurvedic formulas for birth control. People with congestive heart failure should also avoid taking turmeric.
